THE BEST 3 WAYS TO CUT ANYTHING IN PHOTOSHOP CC (2 FOR ALL VERSIONS)
Learn to crop photos and objects in Photoshop. One of the most popular tasks in Photoshop is to cut things, also known as removing the background. In this tutorial, we will see the Quick Selection tool, Refine Edge and the Pen tool. Your choice will depend on the image, see the difference and then choose the best option for your task.
The three methods that I am showing here are Quick Selection and Selection and Mask, which is ideal for things like hair and skin. Then I will show the range of colors, which is amazing for things like trees. Finally, I will give you an intensive course on the pen tool and why you should use it. You’re thinking: “I don’t have all day.” All this happens in 15 minutes. If you use Photoshop, this is a time well spent.
METHOD 1: CUT THE HAIR IN PHOTOSHOP
For the first method, (which works only in Photoshop CC) we will start with this image Woman with red hair.
She has curly hair, so it will be a little harder than straight hair. This technique also works on skins.
STEP 1. THE SELECTION.
Take the quick selection tool from the toolbox.
Instead of selecting our theme, we will select the background because it is simpler. (If it was a complex fund, select our theme instead. Here is a tutorial to trim against busy funds)
Drag your quick selection tool over the area to select it. If you go too far, Alt / Option, drag to deselect areas.
When everything is selected, we need to inverse the selection so that our subject is selected. Choose Select>Inverse or Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+I.
STEP 3. REFINE THE SELECTION.
Click Select and Mask on the top toolbar, this will take you to the Select / Mask workspace.
Increase transparency so that the background is invisible. (This is for preview purposes only).
Change the view to black or white, which best shows the border.
Grab the refine brush for the left toolbar.
Paint over the areas of the flyaway hair. Make sure you get all the ends of the hair and don’t go too far into the image, you just want to get the edges, so you can tell Photoshop what is hair and what is the background.
You will notice that as you perfect, the entire selection becomes smarter and the selection will improve.
Here is a secret weapon in Select and Mask when it comes to hair. Turn on Decontaminate colors. Immediately, the color fringing disappears.
Change output to: New Layer with Layer Mask, Click ok.
RESULT, CUT THE HAIR.
And now we have a good cut. You will see a layer mask on the layer that you can use to further refine the crop if you need it.
METHOD 2: CUT THE TREES WITH COLOR RANGE (WORKS ON ALL PHOTOSHOP VERSIONS).
In this tutorial, we will cut The Tree using the color gamut. This tool is also excellent for reducing transparency, such as glass smoke and liquids (see tutorial).
This is the best method when we need selections and the subject is complex with many holes, but with a uniform color behind.
STEP 1. USING THE COLOR RANGE TO MAKE A SELECTION IN PHOTOSHOP
Choose Select> Color Range.
The dialog box appears.
Choose the left eyedropper tool.
Click on the background, choose the most common color and close to the subject. I clicked on the blue sky. Note that the window in the color gamut shows some bits of white. Those are the selected areas.
STEP 3. REFINING THE SELECTION
Click on the eyedropper that has a + next to it.
Drag this across the background to add to the selection. Here I crawled to the right of the tree to collect all the blues and whites.
I was missing a little, so I clicked on the white area again. Look at the preview window. The notice is a beautiful black and white, this is the goal, approach this.
Slide the blur slider to refine the selection and get our nice black theme and white background.
Watch the ants section marching. We have successfully selected the fund.
STEP 5. SELECTION MASK
Let’s cut this selection: as the fund is selected, we want to invert the area that is cut. (Show the subject and hide the background). Because of this, we will hold down the Alt / Option key and click on the new layer mask. (If the theme is selected, do not press and hold the Alt / Option key). Click on the Layer Mask icon.
You will see that a layer mask has been created (More on the layer masks here).
And here is our nice and clean cutout.
METHOD 3. USING THE PEN TOOL IN PHOTOSHOP TO CUT OUT HARD EDGED SELECTIONS
When it comes to cleaning edges, nothing beats the pencil tool. This makes it the best option for simpler shapes that need a sharp edge. It is one of the most difficult tools to master in Photoshop, but once you download it, it will be very useful. I have created an in-depth tutorial on the pen tool that will take you from a total beginner to a decent understanding of the capabilities of this powerful tool. Be sure to finish this tutorial and watch the video above first.
Here is the image of the car that I used from Adobe Stock. Let’s cut it.
STEP 1. MAKING A GROSS EDGE WITH THE TOOL
I have my own way of using the pencil tool, which I think works quite quickly, I will present it here.
Choose the pencil tool from the toolbar. Make sure the options at the top say route and not form.
Click on the corner where you want to start and drag in the direction you want to make your way
Choose the first curve in your object and then click and drag again. This time you will see an elastic line between the 2 points. Notice how it changes when you drag near or further from the point, or what happens when you change direction. Do not worry about perfection at this point, all we want to do is make a path that follows approximately the contour of the shape.
Note that when I got to the right wheel, I made some points around the car, I keep the ground, so I don’t need to select the bottom of the car.
To finish drawing your path, move the cursor over the first point. As you move, you will see a small circle. Click on that point to close the path and finish drawing.
Tip: The objective is to outline the topic with the least amount of points possible.
STEP 2. REFINING THE ROAD
Some people strive to perfect their paths the first time, and that’s fine too. Personally I like to divide it into 2 phases.
In the Route Selection tool, choose the Direct Selection tool.
You can now click on a point to activate it.
Approach well and close and carefully drag the points to their position. Click on the ends of the handles to change the angle of the curves. Push and pull these endpoints to change the inclination of the curve. It may seem strange at first, but it will be easier with a little practice, hold on!
Tip: To move just one side of the curve, hold down Alt/Option as you drag on an endpoint.
STEP 3. ADD POINTS TO THE CURVE
When you drag a point to narrow areas with many curves, it will be complicated at first.
Here we have dragged the point to the mirror, but we are not getting the correct curve at the top.
Choose the pencil tool with the + in it to add a point.
Finish refining the path using the techniques shown.
Finish refining the path using the techniques shown.
STEP 4. FINISHING THE ROAD.
Once finished, consider moving the outer points to completely cover the sky.
Drag the corner points until you have something like this. If you got here, congratulations!
STEP 5. MAKING A SELECTION FROM A ROUTE
Go to the Routes panel
You will see our path as “Work path”. You can save and use this route as a clipping group in InDesign or Quark Xpress. (If you are going to a design application to print, this is the best option because the route is a vector that sells and prints better than the pixels.) For composition work in Photoshop, make it a selection and mask as in the following steps.
In this case, we will turn it into a selection. Hold down the Cmd / Ctrl key and click on the work path in the Routes panel.
Now you will see the ants section marching.
Press and hold the Alt / Option key to create an inverted mask.
And now we have a perfect cut with the cleanest edges I’ve seen.
Alright, I just showed you 3 methods to crop different images in Photoshop. This is a great tutorial, so be sure to watch the video at the top.
